My husband and I spent a public holiday afternoon at the Wonju Yongsugol Autumn Flower Festival (원주 용수골 가을꽃축제) in Gangwon Province. We went near the end of the festival, so tickets were discounted, and the flower fields were still lovely for photos.

Quick background: the festival takes place in Kkotyanggwi Village (꽃양귀비마을). Kkotyanggwi is the Korean name for the corn poppy (also called the red or Flanders poppy). It’s the ornamental kind, not the opium poppy. The village is famous for its spring poppy festival, but poppies bloom in late spring, so you won’t see them at the autumn festival. You can still get a taste of them, though, with poppy-themed treats like poppy ice cream and sikhye (a sweet Korean rice drink).

About the Wonju Yongsugol Autumn Flower Festival
The festival takes place in Yongsugol, a small valley village in Panbu-myeon, on the edge of Wonju city. Locals call it Kkotyanggwi Village, which means “Poppy Flower Village.” The village is best known for its spring poppy festival. In autumn, it becomes one of the October festivals in Korea, running from late September into early October.
2026 was the 5th year of the autumn festival. It’s run by the residents themselves. They plant the flowers, look after the fields, and staff the festival. According to local news, ticket money goes back into keeping up the fields and running the village.
The autumn festival started in 2022 as a kind of “double cropping” for flowers. Once the spring poppy season ends, villagers plant autumn flowers in the same fields. I love that idea, honestly.
Admission and Tickets
Regular admission is ₩5,000 for middle schoolers and up. Seniors 65+ and a few other groups pay ₩3,000, and kids in elementary school or younger get in free. That’s a big plus for families.
When we visited near the end of the festival, tickets were discounted to ₩3,000 for everyone. I’m not sure if this happens every year, so don’t count on it. But late-season visits might be a little cheaper.
Last entry is at 5 p.m., even though the festival runs until 6. If you’re coming in the afternoon like we did, plan to arrive before then.
The Flowers We Saw
We saw marigolds, sunflowers, and cosmos. Since it was the last weekend, some patches had already faded. But there were still plenty of colorful spots, and the photos came out great.
According to the official poster, this year’s autumn flowers were zinnias, sunflowers, asters, cosmos, and cockscomb. Local news also mentioned teddy bear sunflowers, yellow cosmos, gaura, and globe amaranth, so what you see depends on when you go.
One heads-up: the official poster says poppies bloom in spring and can’t be seen at the autumn festival. If poppies are your thing, aim for the spring poppy festival in the same village (usually late May to early June).

Photo Spots
There are a lot of photo spots scattered around the fields. My favorites were the cute giant rubber duck, the heart sculpture, and a big swing. Even with some flowers past their peak, we didn’t run out of things to photograph.

Food, Shade, and Toilets
The food area is set up in and around a vinyl greenhouse. There’s plenty of shade and lots of benches nearby, so it was easy to sit and take a break.
We tried the poppy ice cream (₩5,000), and it was really good 😋 It’s the easiest way to “meet” poppies at the autumn festival.
The toilets are portable ones. I know that can sound a bit scary, but we had no problems using them.

A Cute Cat Encounter
There was a cute cat at the festival too! I always get excited when I meet a cat on a trip, so this was a nice surprise.

Wonju Yongsugol Autumn Flower Festival: Our Verdict
The Wonju Yongsugol Autumn Flower Festival is a small, relaxed festival run by the people who actually grow the flowers. We went on a holiday afternoon, and it wasn’t crowded at all. Shade and benches were easy to find, and the photo spots kept us busy.
It’s late in the season, so some flowers had faded. But for ₩3,000, a cute cat, and a tasty poppy ice cream, we had a lovely afternoon. If you want the fullest fields, going earlier in the festival is probably the better bet.
If you’re near Wonju with kids, it’s an easy stop (little ones get in free!).
Berry’s verdict: Pretty zinnias and poppy ice cream at a small village festival. If you’re near Wonju, give it a visit! ★★☆☆☆
Norang’s verdict: They met a cat at the festival. They took photos of the cat. A different cat. ★☆☆☆☆
